Types of Exercise
to Get You Moving

Basically, all types of exercise can have some benefit to you. Finding exercise activities that you will engage in on a regular basis is the key.

If you go to a gym you will see all types of machines and classes to get you moving and to give you some variety. Depending on the length of time and effort expended, trying different forms of exercises can stretch and strengthen your muscles and your cardiovascular system.

It really is a good idea to do a variety of types of exercise so that your body gets the benefits of using different muscle groups. Take running for example. A runner uses different muscles than someone who does yoga or weight lifting. If you just do one form of exercise you will continuously build up the same muscles.

So it can be beneficial to round out one's exercise routine by adding another form of exercise to give the other muscle groups a work out too.

A well rounded exercise routine
might look like this:

Start with some basic yoga poses to stretch various muscles in order to increase flexibility and balance. You could switch days of yoga for a day of pilates to work your inner core muscles. Look at adding a weight lifting segment to build and strengthen certain muscles such as your chest, arms, legs and back. Add in some walking to help strengthen your cardiovascular system as well as toning your legs, arms, abdomen, and buttocks.

If you enjoy playing tennis, or racquetball, basketball, or baseball, make sure to include some form of strength training along with stretching exercises to keep your muscles stretched and strengthened to help avoid injuries.

The benefits of exercise can help you stay active throughout your life. Making exercise a regular habit in your life will help keep you in shape both physically and mentally.

Sticking with different types of exercise that you will do on a regular basis will help keep you active through the years. Try mixing things up such as outdoor activities, video tapes or taking classes. The rewards are numerous when you engage your body and mind in doing something for yourself that is good for you.

Think of all of the positives you gain with exercising: increasing your energy, strength, confidence, toning, circulation, losing weight, enhancing your mood and helping with stress relief. There are so many benefits that a person can gain from getting into a regular exercise routine; it just takes motivation and discipline to make it happen.

I find that what works for me is to share an activity that I can do with a friend that is also committed to showing up at a selected time to do the different types of exercise that we enjoy together. This gives us both the added incentive to show up so that we are able to visit with one another at the same time. Whatever will work for you to keep active, have fun and find ways to keep moving for life!
